YanoBiome

The Yanomami, the largest indigenous group of the Amazon rainforest, rarely suffer from chronic diseases common in Western societies, such as obesity, diabetes, allergy, autoimmune disorders etc., which may be attributed to their diverse microbiota. Researchers from the Host-Microbe Interaction lab at Ghent University have collected samples from these Yanomami people and are currently studying their microbiota to understand its potential health benefits. To support this important research, YanoBiome has been established, inviting public donations to help explore the microbiota's role in health and disease, which opens perspectives for the development of novel therapies for diseases linked to a Western lifestyle.
